What BTU do I need for a 12x12 room?
A 12x12 room covers 144 square feet. The required BTU depends on your climate. In a hot climate at 33 to 40 degrees Celsius, such as most of India, the Gulf states, and Southeast Asia, you need approximately 10,800 BTU, which is a 1-ton unit. In a very hot climate above 40 degrees Celsius, you need 14,400 BTU or a 1.5-ton unit. In a temperate climate around 20 to 27 degrees Celsius, 5,040 BTU is sufficient.
How many BTU per square foot do I need in a hot climate?
Standard calculators use 25 BTU per square foot, but this is calibrated for temperate climates below 20 degrees Celsius. In a hot climate at 33 to 40 degrees Celsius you need 75 BTU per square foot. In a very hot climate above 40 degrees Celsius you need 100 BTU per square foot. Warm climates at 27 to 33 degrees Celsius require 50 BTU per square foot.
What is the difference between BTU and tonnage?
BTU and tonnage both measure cooling capacity. One ton of cooling equals exactly 12,000 BTU per hour. A 1.5-ton AC has 18,000 BTU capacity. A 2-ton AC has 24,000 BTU capacity. Tonnage is preferred in South Asia while BTU is standard in North America. Divide BTU by 12,000 to get tons, or multiply tons by 12,000 to get BTU.
Is a bigger AC always better?
No. An oversized AC reaches the set temperature too quickly and shuts off before completing a full cooling cycle. This short-cycling means the AC does not run long enough to remove humidity, leaving the room cold but clammy. It also causes more compressor wear from frequent starts. Right-sizing for the room and climate is essential for efficiency, comfort, and unit longevity.
Why do most AC calculators undersize for hot climates?
Most freely available AC calculators were built for the UK and northern US markets where peak temperatures rarely exceed 27 degrees Celsius. They use a flat 25 BTU per square foot rate. Applying this in Dubai, Delhi, Bangkok, or Lagos, where peak temperatures reach 40 to 46 degrees Celsius, gives a recommendation between one-third and one-half of what is required. How do I calculate my monthly AC electricity cost?
Multiply the AC rated power in kilowatts by the hours used per day, then by days in the month, then by your local tariff per kWh. A 1.5-ton inverter AC rated at 1.2 kW running 8 hours per day for 30 days uses 288 kWh per month. At India average tariff of 7.50 rupees per kWh, that is approximately 2,160 rupees.
